Benedick is the hot-tempered second son of the Twelfth Earl of March. On one memorable occasion he beat up Simon Grey for stealing a Wellington tin soldier. When his father discovered that he had attacked a weaker child, even though that child was in the wrong, he punished Benedict by taking all the toy soldiers. His siblings have teased him about his temper ever since saying “remember Wellington”.

When Julia was younger he dared her to jump over a stream. When she did it successfully he rewarded her with a cherry tart.

He did not approve of Edward Grey because Edward refused to take an opinion on anything.

Benedick once bought a horse from a band of gypsies that were not the ones who camped on the family estate. He was very angry when he discovered he had been tricked into buying an older animal whose coat had been painted.
